Life and Times of Dog Piss

A piss puddle here a shit puddle there. Isn’t having a puppy that is not house trained amazing. All of those little presents that they leave you just outside your bedroom door in the morning. Conveniently, and I swear they plan it, you are always in bare feet. The common pattern is you getting mad, but not truly showing them what was wrong with their actions with just a stern voice; then you feeling bad and petting them soon after.

Their cute little face is something that you find it super hard to get mad at or they look at you with their huge baby eyes and push you over the edge of mad to love again. I am too much of a softy and I know a lot of girls out there have the same problem.

I am learning to surf in Bali right now and am staying at a house where the owner rescues dogs. Now this is an amazing thing for him to do, but recently he bought a puppy to be “his dog”. She is the cutest little Doberman Pincher you have ever seen. Tripping over her paws, falling over her face going downstairs, and mainly just being cute. The problem is this dog is not house trained and the other dogs are slowly starting to copy the behavior because they see she is getting more attention; even if it is negative.

I decided to write this blog post and help train her as I am sick of stepping in a piss puddle as soon as I step out of the bedroom in the morning. After some research I came up with this hints for less piss in the house.

Idea #1
Take your dog outside often.

A puppy sometimes is not physically able to control their muscles that help them “hold it” until they are about 3 months. For this reason you should take your puppy outside often and get used to noticing the signs of about to piss IE stretching a certain way or walking in circles. Keep in mind it is much harder to housebreak a puppy is they smell urine all over the house. For this reason you should set up a space where it is okay for the puppy to pee.

We have started leaving the door open at all times. This has helped as the amount of piss in the house has gone down 50%. The only problem is ALL of the dogs have free rein to come in and out of the house.

Idea #2
Be patient and consistent with not an over reacting temper. Simply yelling at the dog does not show them what they did wrong. The dog will not know what you are yelling about and may not get the message.

Idea #3
When your dog has already made a mess on the floor take the puppy and rub their nose in it adding in words in like “bad dog”. This HAS to be done right away. There is no point in doing is even five minutes after the event as the puppy will think it is the mess that you do not like rather than the act of peeing itself. To your dog the mess and the act are unrelated. This is the reason so many inappropriate places and look guilty about it, but continue to do it.

When you are unhappy with your dog it assumes whatever was done at that VERY moment is what you are upset about.

Idea #4
Clean up the mess with paper. Then take this paper outside and put it where you would like the dog to pee. The dog will start to understand that this is the area that it should go to the bathroom and overtime they will realize this is the place to go.

Idea #5
Of course all of these ideas are useless if the other dogs start catching onto the bad habits. This can be avoided by treating all of the dogs the same. Putting all of them outside instead off just the favorite and making sure to not let the favorite onto the bed when the others aren’t allowed.

Idea #6
Always praise for good behavior. This will show the dog that what they did was right and that they should keep doing it that way. Positive condition is the best way to get repeat positive behavior. This can be done with words, pets, or treats and will show the dog that they are rewarded for positive behavior.

This blog post is for you females who have trouble being harsh with pets. This positive and negative conditioning will help the dog learn and grow up to be well behaved. The effort you put in now will shape how your adult dog reacts to you and behaves. So sweep the conscience free of guilt and show the dog who the alfa is.
